Huesca defend Semedo signing after five-month prison spell

Spanish club Huesca have defended their decision to sign Ruben Semedo after the player has spent five months in prison.

The La Liga side signed Semedo on a season-long loan from fellow league team Villarreal after he left jail just last week, where he had spent the past five months.

The defender was charged by officials with a number of different offences including assault, robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder.

Despite this Huesca sporting director Emilio Vega has defended the club’s decision to bring the 24-year-old to the club, stating that the player had kept himself in good condition by “playing some matches in prison”.

“Ruben is in a very good condition physically and he played matches in prison,” Vega said on Cadena Ser (via Football Espana).

“This club and this city will be good for him, it is a tranquil place and extremely welcoming, it will be like a family for him to allow him to perform to his highest level.

“We will not judge him, he is here because of his football talent and it is up to the justice system to make a ruling and we must always act on assuming people are innocent.

“We will not monitor him away from the pitch, he will have to follow the same rules as the other 23 players in the squad and if he does not, he will be punished.

“Everybody deserves a second chance.”

The former Portugal U21 centre-back joined Villarreal from Sporting CP last summer for a transfer fee of €14 million.

After making just four league appearances for his parent club, Semedo has now been suspended without pay by Villarreal and will continue his professional footballing career this season with Huesca.

Huesca will be playing in La Liga for the first time ever this season, after they finished second in the Segunda Division, earning promotion to Spain’s top flight.
