Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho admits the club could potentially miss out on key transfer targets this summer as he prepares to dethrone neighbours Manchester City.
Mourinho, 55, led the 13-time Premier League winners to a second-place finish last campaign, but ultimately fell considerably short of City who raced to the title with a record 100 points.
The Portuguese tactician will be looking to put up a more threatening challenge on the title this season, though the club have only recruited one major signing in Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer.
United have also signed Lee Grant from Stoke City as a back-up goalkeeper, and teenage full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto, though the Portuguese defender has only mustered a handful of first-team appearances.
There is now an unsettling feeling around Old Trafford that the club may fall short of expectations having not invested significant funds this window, and Mourinho shares those apprehensions.
Asked at the Levi’s Stadium, after watching his side draw 0-0 with San Jose Earthquakes, whether there will be more signings, Mourinho told a news conference, via ESPN: “One thing is what I want and another thing is what is going to happen.”
One player who could be on his way out of United is Anthony Martial, who has made no secret of his frustrations in Manchester having missed out on France’s World Cup-winning squad after making just 18 league starts last term.
However, Mourinho has waved away speculation that the 22-year-old could part ways with the club, as he insists the winger’s future does not lie in his own hands.
He added: “I would like to be in Los Angeles now and I am in San Jose, you cannot do whatever you want in life.
“I would love to arrive in L.A., to train in L.A. and play all my five matches in L.A., and then don’t travel, don’t change hotel and then go back to Manchester.
“I would like to play against Leicester [on the opening weekend of the Premier League season] on Sunday but I have to play on Friday, so you don’t get always in life what you want.”
Mourinho and Co. could only manage to draw their first two friendly matches in the United States, and they now face Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.
After proceedings across the Atlantic conclude, United will tee of the Premier League campaign with a Friday night fixture against Leicester City on August 10.
