Jose Mourinho: Exciting talent Tahith Chong is not ready for Man Utd first team

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he doesn’t think promising youngster Tahith Chong is ready for the United first-team.

The talented Dutch youngster came on to replace Anthony Martial in the Red Devil’s pre-season friendly against Club America as part of their current tour.

He played well during the 1-1 draw leading to some suggestions that he could be part of the United first-team this season after excelling during his time in the academy, but Mourinho revealed that he would rather Chong continue with his development before taking that next step.

“I have plans to make him train the most possible times with us,” Mourinho told MUTV. “Because that increases his evolution but he has to play where he belongs, he has to play in the academy and develop physically, because physically is where he is not ready.

“Technically he is very good, tactically he understands the game and he understands his position, but by the physical point of view, but when the game gets into contact situations he is in trouble, he is fragile, he is still a kid.

“But the talent is there, the personality is there, the passion to play, the humility to learn, so this is a fantastic experience for him.”

Mourinho continued: “If he can play like today, 20 or 25 minutes in every one of these five matches and, if during the season he trains with us, and has a couple of occasions to play minutes with us, I don’t know, depends, some cup matches.

“He is one of the good kids we have. It is not for today but for the tomorrow he is a good kid.”

Manchester United have produced some of the finest young players of modern football with Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Paul Scholes just some of the household names and they will be hoping to continue to bring through talented youngsters over the next few years.

United kick-off the 2018/19 season against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday August 10.
