Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will allow captain Jordan Henderson time to recuperate for the forthcoming Premier League season after reaching the World Cup semi-final with England.
The Reds are set to lock horns with West Ham on August 12, but Klopp will be without his skipper as he was forced to “convince” the 28-year-old to take a rest after a heavy schedule this summer.
Henderson played an integral role in the Three Lions’ journey to the penultimate knockout stage in the World Cup, forming a vital pivot in Gareth Southgate’s midfield.
England would ultimately lose 2-1 to Croatia, but Henderson was hoping to get back on the horse and feature as soon as possible, though his manager at Anfield has other ideas.
“It was a hard fight to convince him that he needed a holiday,” said Klopp, via Sky Sports. “I knew it would happen. On the phone, I said ‘crazy’.
“Jordan needs a holiday, so that means August 5 he will be back. Dejan had a party in Croatia and played a day later (than Henderson at the World Cup), so he will be back on August 6.
“That would mean five days’ training, after three weeks’ holiday.
“I hope we are in a situation where we don’t need to think about using these two (against West Ham).”
Despite Henderson’s absence, Klopp will have no shortage of central midfield options after recruiting Monaco’s Fabinho and RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita.
However, the German tactician will be without Emre Can, who completed a switch to Italy with Juventus at the start of the summer, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury is significantly worse than originally feared.
The former Arsenal midfielder could be set to miss the majority of the season after sustaining multiple ligament damage to his right knee during Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final clash against Roma at Anfield in April.
