Klopp confirms Alisson debut date and status as Liverpool’s new No.1

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Alisson will be first choice goalkeeper this season, despite sending him on holiday instead of taking him on the club’s US pre-season tour.

The Brazilian number one recently joined Liverpool from Italian side Roma for an initial £56million – a world record fee for a goalkeeper.

And despite Alisson’s eagerness to join up with the Liverpool squad in America, Jurgen Klopp has sent him on holiday, insisting he needs a rest after playing 49 games for Roma last season – as well as appearing in five games at the World Cup for Brazil.

Klopp told Sky Sports: “When I saw him at Melwood, he looked fit, he’s desperate to play. He wanted to stay, but it made absolutely no sense.

“He’s had a long year. As Brazil No 1, it was quite an intense year. The World Cup is not a tournament you only play a little bit, it was intense. So I sent him on holiday again.”

Liverpool played Klopp’s old club, Borussia Dortmund, in the glamorous International Champions Cup friendly tournament in the USA on Sunday and will face Premier League Rivals Manchester United and Manchester City this week in the same competition.

But with Alisson on holiday, Klopp was asked about the potential date for the 25-year-old’s debut, as well as the future of Loris Karius.

He said: “There will still be two games to play before West Ham and then West Ham is only the first game of the season, not the last one. So we will see.

“Obviously Alisson is a world-class goalkeeper, so we’re not going to say ‘let’s have a look’. He will play, of course.

“He is the No 1 for Brazil and then there is the fee. When Alisson is ready, he will be in our goal. We all need to help him so he can perform as good as possible. That is maybe the only difference.

“But for that to happen we need a strong squad around him and Loris is an outstanding goalkeeper. That’s the truth. Nothing else.”

Karius had another night to forget in a Liverpool shirt against Dortmund as he conceded three in a 3-1 defeat, which included an injury-time mistake to gift the German side their third goal.
