Leroy Sane’s World Cup snub can make him stronger, says Pep Guardiola

Leroy Sane could use his surprise omission from the Germany World Cup squad to improve as a player, according to Pep Guardiola

Sane, 22, was not included in Joachim Low’s 23-man squad despite being voted the PFA Young Player of the Year and generally being seen as one of the best players in German football.

And Guardiola, who will be hoping Sane can help City to another Premier League title along with other honours this coming season, believes the young winger can use the snub as fuel to develop as a player even further.

“Leroy has to accept that this decision may make him stronger,” Guardiola said, via Daily Mail. ‘He’s so young and in two years it is another European Championships and then in four years another World Cup.

“I think it’s the past now. The national trainer decided what’s the best for the national team.

“Leroy has to accept it and move forward. He has the chance to show the national team from Germany and first of all us, he has another season to show his quality.

“He has to improve his game, try to keep the levels he showed last season. We are so happy to have him here,” Guardiola added.

Germany were knocked out of the World Cup at the group stage in a shock result that surprised the footballing world.

Man City, meanwhile, won the Premier League, amassing 100 points, and won the League Cup.

Sane scored 10 and assisted 15 in the league in an impressive showing for City last season, now, after having a full summer of rest, Guardiola will be hoping the German will kick on even further.

Man City’s first league game of the season is against Arsenal away on August 12.
