Man City boss Pep Guardiola rues missing out on “exceptional” Chelsea signing Jorginho

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has described Chelsea new boy Jorginho as “exceptional” despite missing out on his signing.

The 26-year-old Italian midfielder, who has been a revelation at Stadio San Paolo across the last few seasons, recently joined the Blues with former Neapolitan boss Maurizio Sarri also relocating to Stamford Bridge.

His seamless ability to dictate play earned him a plethora of admirers, including Guardiola, who many expected would manage the Brazilian-born footballer but that hasn’t come to fruition and the Spanish tactician isn’t losing any sleep over it.

“I’m not disappointed. We tried,” he told a press conference.

“My advice for all players is they have to go where they want to go, and in the end it would have been a mistake for him and for us if he’d decided to come here when he wanted to go with Maurizio and Chelsea.

“English football receives an exceptional player. All the best for him.”

Napoli’s pass master

A graduate of Verona’s youth academy, the Brazilian-born Jorginho moved to Napoli in 2014 and has never looked back since.

Renowned for his game intelligence as well as distribution, Jorginho has quickly become one of Serie A’s most effective midfielders, averaging 96.9 passes per game across the 2017/18 season.

His metronomic ways caught the attention of the aforementioned Guardiola, who previously complimented the Italian international, but it’s Chelsea who are to benefit from his talents and his addition will no doubt bolster their chances of returning to the highest echelon of English football having finished in fifth last season.
