Niko Kovac to give Renato Sanches a chance to fight for a place at Bayern

Renato Sanches will be given a chance to kick-start his Bayern Munich career according new head coach Niko Kovac.

The former Croatian international looks set to give the Portuguese midfielder a second chance after he struggled to make an impact following a €35m move from Benfica.

Sanches shined for Portugal at Euro 2016 where he was named Young Player of the Tournament as Portugal shocked hosts France in the final to emerge victorious.

The player then struggled to recapture that form at Bayern, failing to score in his 17 appearances during the 2016/17 season.

Last season he was sent on loan to Premier League Swansea City but also failed to impress at the Welsh club, making just 12 appearances for the Swans before getting injured. He was subsequently left out of Portugal’s final 2018 World Cup squad altogether.

Despite his struggles, Kovac has refused to shut the door on the 20-year-old and will be hoping to get the player back to his best ahead of the 2018/19 season.

The Bayern coach revealed that he is hoping the Portuguese youngster will fight for his future at the Allianz Arena.

“He is a young player and young players fluctuate now and again, that is completely normal,” Kovac said at his first news conference since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt to take charge.

“On the other hand he is from another country, so you have to understand if he doesn’t integrate in no time at all.

“I will try to integrate him, so that he will be comfortable around here, because when someone feels comfortable, it is much easier to make a good performance.”

Kovac added: “There is no question that he has qualities, he showed that before and that’s why Bayern signed him.

“I am excited to work with him, because he has qualities you don’t see very often in the Bundesliga.

“I hope that he will accept the fight and he will be motivated to give it all from the first moment on. And then I am convinced that he will show us the performances that we expect from him and the ones that he expects from himself.”

Bayern won their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title last season and will be expected to make it seven straight in 2018/19 with Kovac hoping to become a title winning coach for the first time.
