Olivier Giroud: Ex-Arsenal teammate Mesut Ozil can no longer shush me

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has revealed how former Arsenal teammate Mesut Ozil used to taunt him in training.

Giroud says that even when Ozil had lost a training-ground match he would shush the rest of his teammates by reminding them he was a world champion.

Germany won the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil, but they had a miserable tournament in Russia and crashed out of the group stages.

France won the quadrennial tournament in 2018 and Giroud, who started in France’s 4-2 win against Croatia, will probably not have to suffer that kind of indignity again.

“I trained with Germans at Arsenal and I was so jealous of them,” Giroud told Football London.

“Sometimes, in the morning, Mesut Ozil lost in training but he said ‘ Shh, Shh, I’m World champion.”

Although Giroud now owns a World Cup winners medal his performance in the final wasn’t well received by commentators in France.

The France international also had a mediocre campaign in the Premier League last season, only scoring seven times in 29 games, less than half the tally he managed in the last two Premier League campaigns.

Giroud is currently enjoying a holiday. He will probably be available for the Blues when they take on Manchester City for the Community Shield on 5 August.
