Sanchez and Martial to start season as Man Utd’s main strikers, says Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that both Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial will start this season as the club’s main strikers.

Sanchez signed for United on transfer deadline day back in January but struggled to replicate the fine form he had produced throughout his time at Arsenal.

Martial’s stuttering involvement in the United first-team meant that the Frenchman wasn’t called up to the France World Cup squad and thus missed out on winning the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Subsequently, Martial has been making noise regarding a move away from Old Trafford, with the youngster seeking first-team football as he continues his development in the game.

However, Mourinho has confirmed that both Sanchez and Martial will be United’s first-choice strikers heading into the next campaign, with the club hoping to bridge the gap between themselves and last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City.

Mourinho spoke to reporters (via Manchester Evening News) and simply said: “It’s important to work with Mata, Martial and Alexis as they will be the players we think that will start our season in attack.”

Presumably, both Sanchez and Martial, in particular, will get the early opportunity to impress due to the longevity of both Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford’s World Cup campaign’s that saw both players reach the third and fourth place play-off with Belgium and England respectively.

With Lukaku expected to return to first-team matters upon his return to the squad, the jury is still out on whether Mourinho will allow Rashford the time to continue developing in the United first-team.

United kick off the Premier League season against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday August 10.
