New Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri believes his coaching philosophy is closer to Pep Guardiola’s than Jose Mourinho’s despite having huge respect for the Manchester United boss.
Sarri was meeting the media for the first time since taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge after Antonio Conte’s departure.
The Tuscan native came to the attention of the world due to his exploits at Empoli, a club he managed to keep in Serie A despite their small stature.
A move to Napoli followed where he led a title challenge last season that fell just short in the final weeks of the season allowing Juventus to triumph again.
His appointment at Chelsea had been mooted long before he eventually signed on the dotted line and he will now be hoping to impose his footballing ideas on a club that finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League last season, having won the title the previous year.
He will be hoping to lift Chelsea above both Manchester United and Manchester City next season, to both of whose managers he is well acquainted.
Speaking about Mourinho, Sarri said: “He has won everything and I think that is enough as a manager.
“He has won everything and I think someone who has this track record does not need a description.
“We are talking about a world level manager.
“I esteem Pep, and the other managers, my style is closest to Guardiola.”

Guardiola struggled during his first season in the English Premier League, a point not lost on Sarri but the new Chelsea boss thinks that Manchester City’s boss proved just how good he is last season but leading City to the title.
“Well he is a class act, a champion and a genius.
“It is difficult to explain his insights.
“Clearly he had some difficulties in the first year, but 100 points in PL is extraordinary, might not be repeated.
“For us we need to fill in a gap. I hope last year was an occasional gap.”
Closing the gap will take some doing. Chelsea finished 30 points behind champions Manchester City last season and will need to improve the squad if they are to get closer to their rivals.
They have already added Italian midfielder Jorginho from Napoli and Sarri is hoping to add another central midfielder before their Premier League season kicks-off away to Huddersfield Town on August 11.
