Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovas has backed Renato Sanches to pull his career back on the right track and has promised to give him time this season.
Sanches, 20, initially joined Bayern from Benfica in 2016, shortly after his performances for Portugal en route to winning Euro 2016 earned him the tournament’s Best Young Player award.
But his Bayern career did not get off to a great start and it was hoped a loan spell with Swansea City last season would help his development.
Sanches, however, failed to impress in Wales as the Swans were relegated from the Premier League. But Kovac has given the midfielder a fresh start at Bayern and is ready to give him as much time as he needs to fulfil his potential.
“You have to keep in mind that when a player comes from a foreign country, you can not simply expect him to establish himself in a new environment in no time,” he told reporters (via Goal).
“This is the same with any foreign player, you have to give the players time. I do not think that time was given to him and now he has this time.
“He came into training very motivated from the beginning, I’ve seen it every day for three weeks, he is really pushing and that’s why I’m glad that he made a good game and scored a nice free-kick goal.
“You just have to give those people who come from elsewhere more time than they might need in this business.”
Kovac is preparing to take charge of Bayern for his first season having replaced Jupp Heynckes at the end of last term. The Croatian was previously manager of Eintracht Frankfurt, with whom he beat Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final in May.
Renato Sanches’ fresh start with Bayern
Back with Bayern after his year in the Premier League, Sanches started in Kovac’s first game in charge as the Bundesliga champions beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

After Timothy Weah had put PSG ahead and Javi Martinez equalised, the Portuguese midfielder put his side ahead with a fine free-kick from 19 yards out shortly before being substituted.
Sanches played well throughout against the French champions and will no doubt give Kovac something to think about ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season.
