Kevin Mirallas handed Everton’s No.8 shirt despite being told to train away from the first team

Kevin Mirallas has been handed Everton’s No.8 shirt for this season, despite reports suggesting he has been told to train away from the first-team.

Mirallas has featured heavily for the Toffees in pre-season, a surprise given his poor campaign last year, which ended with an unsuccessful loan return to Olympiakos.

Despite his amount of game time in pre-season, reports emerged earlier this week that Mirallas, along with Cuco Martina, Ashley Williams and Nikola Vlasic, had been told by Marco Silva to train away from their teammates.

Williams has since left the club to join Stoke City on loan. Martina and Vlasic are expected to join him through the exit door, and a similar fate seemed to await Mirallas, who is heavily linked with a loan move to Fiorentina.

“Take that number 8 off Mirallas immediately”

Now, however, his future has become less clear and this latest twist has left fans baffled.

A number of Everton fans have pointed out that Mirallas’ name is still unavailable to buy on the back of new Everton shirts, while Premier League rules do state that a player must be given a squad number, regardless of their club’s intentions to sell or move the player on. Even with those rules, giving a player linked with a transfer away such a prominent number remains odd from the outside.

Theo Walcott will take up Mirallas’ old No.11 shirt, while Sandro Ramirez is the surprise recipient of the No.9 shirt.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has been handed the No.10 shirt while new signings, Richarlison and Lucas Digne, will wear No.30 and No.12 respectively.
