Gonzalo Higuain explains why he joined AC Milan instead of Chelsea

AC Milan‘s new loan signing Gonzalo Higuain has revealed he decided against joining Chelsea due to a lack of enthusiasm from the Premier League club.

Higuain, 30, joined AC Milan on a season-long loan from Serie A champions Juventus with an option to buy at the end of the campaign.

The striker had also heavily been linked with a move to Chelsea over the summer to link up with former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

And now, the Argentine has revealed he opted for Milan over Chelsea due to the Italian club’s desire in signing him as whole, while at Stamford Bridge it was just Sarri.

“In total sincerity, the esteem I have for Sarri is huge but he was the only who wanted me,” he told reporters at his unveiling in Milan (via Goal).

“Here at Milan everyone wanted me, and this is why I made my choice to come here.

“I have been playing in Europe for 12 years, Milan was the team that struck me the most, it’s what the player wants to see: History, lots of green, pure football. It gives you goosebumps, it’s special stuff.”

At the same time as Higuain’s move to Milan, Leonardo Bonucci returned to Juventus from the Rossoneri after a year in a swap deal which saw Mattia Caldara go the other way.

Higuain’s Serie A career so far

Milan represent the third Italian team Gonzalo Higuain has represented in his career, after Napoli and Juventus.

The Argentina striker initially joined Napoli in 2013 from Real Madrid, and quickly became a favourite at the Partenopei.

Higuain scored 92 goals in 147 appearances for the club, before joining Juventus three years later. His two seasons with the Old Lady brought 55 goals in 105 appearances but the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer threatened his place as the club’s starting striker.
