Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen says he is “honoured” to be considered for a vice-captaincy role at the club this season.
The German, who has 20 caps for Die Mannschaft, is preparing for his fifth season as a Barcelona player having already made 141 appearances for the Spanish champions.
With the departure of Andres Iniesta to Japanese side Vissel Kobe, Barca’s all-time top goalscorer, Lionel Messi, is taking up the armband.
Barcelona usually appoint three vice-captains and, with Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique already named as the others, ter Stegen is currently in-line to take up the fourth spot.
And speaking to FourFourTwo about his potential new role, the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach man said: “It’s something that the squad will decide, but it’s an honour that my name is being talked about for the captaincy position.
“It would be an honour to be one of the captains, of course it would. But for me it’s not the most important thing. We need more than four captains.”
Ter Stegen also feels that Real Madrid will be just as big of a challenge to their domestic title this season, despite the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.
He said: “I think they have an amazing team, like every year, just like us.
“It’ll be equally difficult to play against them with or without Ronaldo.”
Barcelona complete their pre-season preparations against AC Milan on Sunday before they face Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup a week later, which is a one-legged affair as opposed to the traditional two.
