World Cup star Denis Cheryshev joins Valencia

Russia winger Denis Cheryshev will spend the 2018/19 season on loan at Valencia after the Spanish club completed a temporary deal to sign him from Villareal on Wednesday.

Cheryshev was perhaps the standout performer in a Russia side that surprised many by making the World Cup quarter-finals this summer.

The former Real Madrid man was not in the starting XI for Russia’s first group game but went on to score four goals in the five games that Russia played, including two that were strong contenders to win goal of the tournament.

This will be Cheryshev’s second loan spell at Valencia, after spending the second half of the 2016/17 season on loan there under the management of Gary Neville.

Can Cheryshev replicate his World Cup form with Valencia?

The 27-year-old has had an interesting career to date, having played all of his club football in Spain. At a young age, he followed his father Dmitri to begin his football career with Sporting Gijón.

He came through Real Madrid’s academy but only appeared in seven games for the first team. Loan spells with Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia followed, before a permanent move to Villarreal in 2016.

Now in the prime years of his career, Cheryshev will be keen to kick on and prove himself as one of La Liga’s most consistent performers. He’s only managed four goals for Villarreal in the last two years, but his World Cup performances over the summer caught the eye of many.
