Jordi Alba has declared Barcelona stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as ‘the best goalkeeper in the world.’
Ter Stegen pulled off a string of fine saves as Barca beat Real Sociedad 2-1 on Saturday and following the victory, Alba paid tribute to the German international.
“For me, Ter Stegen is the best (goalkeeper) in the world and he saved us. Regardless of who played, because everyone here is important, the game changed,” Alba said (via Football Espana).
“The important thing is the three points. In the first half, we weren’t at our usual level. They arrived at once, scored against us and locked themselves up, so we found it difficult.
“Everything changed after the break, when we found our level and they only threatened on the counterattack.”
The Blaugrana begin their Champions League campaign against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday, having not won the competition since 2015.
They have also had to sit back and watch arch-rivals Real Madrid win four of the last five competitions, with Alba admitting Barca would like to win this ‘special competition’ once again.
He added: “We’re not worried about the Champions League, we’re winning matches at the moment. Our objectives? Everything, although it’s true that the Champions League is a special competition.”
The left-back was also asked about the prospect of playing their January fixture against Girona in Miami and claims it is largely out of the hands of the players.
The 66-time Spanish international added: “It’s a decision the club have to make. They haven’t asked me about it yet, but they’ve spoken to the captains. It’s a long trip and I guess the Girona players want to play on their own field, but the players can’t do much…”
Barcelona have made a perfect start to the new La Liga season, winning all four of their games so far, with Alba scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Their next league game is at home to Girona on Sunday.
