Alderweireld and Trippier left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad for “technical” reasons, confirms Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has made the “technical decision” to leave Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier at home for Tottenham’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan.

Spurs travel to Italy aiming to avoid a third straight defeat in all competitions following Premier League losses against Watford and Liverpool.

Prior to Pochettino’s press conference on Monday, Spurs confirmed via Twitter that Hugo Lloris, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko will all miss Tuesday’s match through injury.

And when the press conference began, Pochettino revealed Alderweireld and Trippier have also been left out of the squad.

However, the Tottenham boss refused to elaborate on what he meant by the “technical” nature of the decision made to leave two key players back home in London.

“It was a technical decision. You can find it in the dictionary, technical decision,” Pochettino said, as reported by Sky Sports.

“Maybe tactical also on the pitch, yes, it’s tactical too but it’s a technical decision. You cannot bring 25 players and can only play 11 and seven on the bench. That is the reason.”

Alderweireld was heavily linked with a transfer to Manchester United over the summer but failed to secure a move away from Spurs before the Premier League’s August 9th transfer deadline.

The Belgian has subsequently been included in the starting line-up in each of Tottenham’s last four games, but won’t feature against Inter.

Trippier has emerged as Pochettino’s preferred option at right-back in recent months. He is likely to be replaced by Serge Aurier at the San Siro.
