Mane: Firmino makes things easy for Salah and me

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane says “animal” Roberto Firmino makes it easy for him and Mohamed Salah at the club.

The Senegalese forward had one of the finest campaigns of his career last season yet, due to the fine attacking talent available to Liverpool, it was somewhat overlooked.

Mane’s team-mate Mohamed Salah won all the plaudits as he scored 32 goals in the Premier League, breaking the single-season scoring record for the English top flight.

Mane found the net 20 times in all competitions last season but was outdone by both Firmino, who bagged 27 goals, and Salah, who netted an incredible 44.

Mane, who is well-known for his modest character, was quick to point out that his life is made a lot easier at Liverpool due to the presence of Brazilian Roberto Firmino.

“Lots of people like to talk about me and Salah. It’s nice to hear those things, but the strength of this Liverpool team is the collective,” Mane told Bleacher Report.

“You also can’t forget that there’s a guy up front called Firmino who works like an animal for us and makes things easier. And the guys behind us do some extraordinary work. We try to benefit from that and help the team go forward.”

The Liverpool forward is the third Senegalese player to wear the red of Liverpool and, despite not winning any silverware so far, he is already the most successful. In fact, one of his compatriots that represented the club is also an idol of Mane’s from his youth.

He added: “When I was young, I had lots of favourite footballers, but Ronaldinho was my real favourite, along with El-Hadji Diouf from Senegal.

“They really inspired me. Those two players were examples for me as a footballer. They were skilful players and good dribblers who beat their opponents easily.

“I was a very good dribbler as a young player, but now that I’ve got more experience, there are some useless things that I don’t do anymore. It’s all about making and scoring goals for the team, like my idols did when they were at the peak of their powers.”

Liverpool have made the perfect start to the new season, comfortably beating Spurs at Wembley last time out, and they face Paris Saint-Germain in the first Champions League fixture of the season on Tuesday.

The Reds made the final of Europe’s elite competition last season only to lose to Real Madrid but, with vast improvements made to the squad over the summer, many are tipping them to go one step further this season.
