Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has launched a tongue in cheek attack on Uefa’s Goal of the Season panel after his overhead kick in the Champions League final was completely overlooked.
Bale, 29, lit up the NSC Olimpiyskiy after netting an acrobatic overhead kick in the final of Europe’s premier knockout tournament against Liverpool in May.
With the match finely poised at 1-1 in the second half, the Welshman entered the fray for Isco and moments later produced a moment of magic, before going on to net a second 20 minutes later as Los Blancos clinched a third successive European crown.
Despite this, the panel adjudicating Uefa’s Goal of the Season award for the 2017/18 season chose Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kick against Juventus in the quarter-final, for their Champions League nominee, as only one goal from the competition is allowed to make the shortlist.
In response to the snub, Bale spoke to the Daily Mail of his confusion surrounding the selection process of the goal, refusing to state whether his former teammate deserved to win the award.
He said: “I don’t know how it wasn’t on that list! I want to know who is on the panel because they want to be sacked.”
On whether Ronaldo’s goal was better, he added: “It’s not for me to say!”
Bale received widespread adulation after netting the emphatic goal and many now regard the strike as one of the greatest in the history of Champions League finals.
The significance and execution of the strike drew immediate comparisons with that of Zinedine Zidane and his lethal left-footed volley in the 2002 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
Bale and his Real Madrid teammates will attempt to extend their winning record in the competition to four consecutive years this season, and they start their European campaign against Roma on Wednesday.
