Ben Foster feels sorry for Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has said he feels sorry for Petr Cech as the Arsenal stopper continues to struggle with Unai Emery’s tactics.

Emery, who took over from Arsene Wenger in the summer, instructs his side to play out from the back despite the risk of losing possession in dangerous areas.

Cech has already made a number of errors with the ball at his feet – on Sunday he gave the ball straight to Cardiff City midfielder Harry Arter who could only blast over.

Despite his mistakes, the former Chelsea goalkeeper has started each of Arsenal’s four Premier League matches so far this term with new signing Bernd Leno remaining on the bench.

But Foster, who has made an impressive start to life with high-flying Watford since joining from West Bromwich Albion, has defended his positional colleague.

“Cech is one of the best goalkeepers the Premier League has seen but that really is not his game,” Foster told BBC Radio 5 live.

“He has spent his whole career playing one style of football and now, at the end of his career, he’s being asked to play another one altogether.

“His strong points have always been being big and commanding and making saves, but the way football is going now you almost have to be one of those Ederson-type of goalkeepers.

“For a lot of goalies, it really isn’t an easy thing to do. It’s going to take some time to get used to and I do feel sorry for him.”

Cech is yet to keep a clean sheet this season, conceding a total of eight goals across the Gunners’ four games.

Meanwhile, Foster has conceded just three times in four appearances for the Hornets, who are currently third in the Premier League after making a 100% start to their campaign.

Arsenal face Newcastle United at St James’ Park in their next outing after the current international break.
