Liverpool priced Divock Origi out of moves to two big European clubs, says father

Liverpool priced forward Divock Origi out of the market according to claims made by the player’s father, Mike Okoth.

The Belgian international has not featured in any of Liverpool’s match-day squads this season after failing to impress Jurgen Klopp this summer. The 23-year-old has two years left on his current deal at Anfield and the club refused to lower their asking price.

It is thought that the Reds were asking for a fee in the region of £27m for the player and, despite interest from Borussia Dortmund and Valencia, no deal was reached for the player during the transfer window.

Despite the player’s frustration at a lack of a move, his father admitted his son needs to get his head down at Melwood and try to force his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s plans, also revealing interested parties could not afford the asking price.

“Divock is still a Liverpool player, and is still on contract until the end of the 2019-2020 season,” said Okoth.

“The coach (Klopp) is already happy with what he’s seeing with Divock in training and it’s up to the young man to now fight for a place in the team.

“Dortmund and Valencia showed good interest but they couldn’t match what Liverpool wanted and there was no way Divock was going out on loan again so he will have to fight for his place.

In football, you shouldn’t live in past glory but always fight to be the best and to be relevant on the day.”

Speaking to Daily Nation of Kenya, Okoth added: “He has seen the difference between Liverpool and other clubs and will obviously know that he has to fight hard to remain in Liverpool which is a bigger club.

“Three months in football is a long time and Divock is already doing well in training and the coach is happy. Let’s wait and see what will happen between now and the winter window.”

The ex-Lille man spent last season on loan at German side Wolfsburg but has not seen competitive action in a Liverpool shirt since a brief cameo off the bench in their opening day 3-3 draw against Watford last season.

Liverpool have won all four of their games so far this season and take on Tottenham next looking to make it five out of five.
