Liverpool “general” Jordan Henderson has Jurgen Klopp’s complete trust

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he completely trusts Jordan Henderson following his contract renewal.

The 28-year-old central midfielder recently put pen to paper on a new five-year deal which keeps him at Anfield until June 2023.

Much-maligned for most of his career, the Sunderland-born footballer is an integral part of Klopp’s team as captain, and the German manager says he couldn’t ask for a better leader.

“Jordan embodies entirely what it means to be a Liverpool player in this modern era of football,” he said (via BBC Sport).

“The best thing is he will get even better in these coming years. Jordan is so important to us and we are very fortunate as a club to have this person commit to us as he has.

“You can tell through his actions on and off the pitch he treats representing our badge and our shirt as a privilege.

“He carries a lot on his shoulders that people on the outside won’t see, but he embraces that responsibility and that leadership. He is our ‘General’ and I trust him completely.”

This season is Henderson’s eighth at Anfield following his transfer from boyhood-club Sunderland in 2011. To date, he’s made 284 appearances for the Merseysiders, scoring 24 goals and creating a further 40.

The departure of club legend Steven Gerrard at the end of the 2014/15 campaign saw former boss Brendan Rodgers hand him the captain’s armband, though he’s yet to lift a piece of silverware as skipper.

At international level, England’s semi-final loss to Croatia at this summer’s World Cup was his 44th appearance for the Three Lions, having made his debut back in November 2010 against France.

Liverpool take on Spurs in the league at Wembley after the international break on September 15.
