Napoli to demand explanation from Uefa after drawing Liverpool in Champions League

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has said he will ask Uefa for an explanation after the Italian side were drawn in the same Champions League group as Liverpool.

De Laurentiis believes the Merseysiders, who reached last season’s final, should not have been in Pot three.

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League behind Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham in 2017/18, meaning they missed out on a place in Pots 1 and 2.

As a result, they were drawn in Group C with Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.

Napoli were in Pot 2 after finishing in second in Serie A last season, while French champions PSG were in Pot 1.

But De Laurentiis insists the fact Liverpool reached May’s Champions League final means they should not have been in Pot 3.

“We are bitter,” De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, according to GianlucaDimarzio.com.

“I will ask for an explanation from Uefa. Liverpool, Champions League finalists, are put in Pot 3? It is a disastrous anomaly.”

Napoli were eliminated in the group stages last season, finishing third behind Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk, while Liverpool topped their group and went all the way to the final, only to lose 3-1 against Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will face PSG at Anfield in their first Champions League game of the season on September 18th, while Napoli kick off their European campaign against Red Star Belgrade.
