Liverpool misfit Lazar Markovic denies suggestions he snubbed Anderlecht for more money

Liverpool midfielder Lazar Markovic has claimed money did not play a part in his failed transfer to Anderlecht on deadline day.

Markovic, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2014, has made only 34 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, spending time on loan at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and Hull City.

On deadline day, the Serbian looked set for a move to Anderlecht, where he spent the second half of last season on loan.

But the move broke down and the Belgian club’s manager, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, claimed Markovic’s demands were responsible for the failed deal.

“Our president and sports director did everything to convince Markovic,” Vanhaezebrouck said, according to the Independent.

“They waited until Liverpool lowered the price. They almost did a crazy effort for the player, but it wasn’t enough. It’s his own fault that the deal fell through.”

But Markovic disputes those claims, insisting money had nothing to do with the fact a transfer didn’t go through.

“Thank you for making such a great effort for trying to get me back in the club,” Markovic said on Twitter. “However, money was not the issue!!!!! Good luck in the future @rscanderlecht.”

The 24-year-old is set for a quiet season after being left out of Liverpool’s Premier League squad by Jurgen Klopp, although he could leave the club in January.

The Merseysiders signed Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita and Fabinho over the summer, making Markovic surplus to requirements at Anfield – if he wasn’t already.

Liverpool face Tottenham at Wembley in their next match after the international break – they could make it five wins from their opening five Premier League games for the first time in the club’s history.
