The moment Romelu Lukaku showed he is the ‘image’ of Man Utd

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has lauded Romelu Lukaku for his exploits at both ends of the pitch during the club’s 2-1 win over Watford.

Lukaku, 25, scored his fourth goal of the season at Vicarage Road on Saturday evening, opening the scoring against the Hornets in the 35th minute, but it was the Belgian’s efforts at the other end of the pitch that caught the eye of Mourinho.

The Portuguese tactician was impressed by the attitude of Lukaku after the striker covered half the length of the pitch to make a sliding challenge, ultimately denying Watford a goalscoring opportunity after he was originally dispossessed.

“I’m very happy with the points, I’m very happy with the spirit,” Mourinho told reporters (via the Evening Standard). “I am very happy with something that represents for me the spirit of the team, which is Lukaku’s sliding tackle after 50 metres running back to help the team.

“But I feel a bit frustrated because we had everything in the first half to kill the game. I think if we played the second half in the way we played the last bit of the first we would be in this moment with a completely different result, and without the last 10 minutes.

“But no, in the beginning of the second half we let the game go down in intensity, we stopped to be aggressive with and without the ball. We gave them the chance to be reborn and score a goal and give us a difficult match.”

The Red Devils have bounced back in impressive fashion after suffering back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Spurs, with the 3-0 loss against Mauricio Pochettino’s men inflicting the heaviest home defeat of Mourinho’s management career.

The Portuguese, in particular, has come under heavy criticism this season and the pressure was considerably cranked up after the aforementioned defeats, but he has since masterminded wins against Burnley and Watford to alleviate frustration at Old Trafford.

Up next for Mourinho and Co is a Champions League group match against Young Boys on Wednesday, before they lock horns with Wolves on Saturday.

Lukaku at Manchester United

Since joining the Red Devils from Everton last summer for £75m, Lukaku has fired home 31 goals and assisted his teammates on nine occasions in 56 matches across all competitions.

During his maiden campaign, the Belgian bagged 16 Premier League goals, and he is already on course to trump his previous tally, netting four goals this season, including the opener against Watford on Saturday.

In the league, the 25-year-old scored more goals (16), took on more shots (86), won more aerial duels (209), and provided the second-most assists (seven) of any United player last term.
