Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero can become the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer according to team-mate Bernardo Silva.
Aguero scored again on Saturday to take his tally for the season to five in the Premier League, second only to Eden Hazard (six) in the early race for the Golden Boot.
The 30-year-old has now scored 148 goals in the Premier League since joining in 2011 and is widely regarded as one of the best strikers the competition has seen.
Former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker Alan Shearer still leads the way at the top of the charts with 260 Premier League goals, but Bernardo Silva believes Aguero can catch the Englishman.
“I think he can reach it,” he said (via BBC Sport). “He’s got the potential.
“Every season he keeps scoring more and more. We hope he can keep helping us winning more titles in Manchester.
“Sergio is the best scorer in Manchester City’s history.
“He’s a legend not only for Manchester City but also for the Premier League, if not the best striker in the world then one of the best.

“You have to admire players that scores 30 goals and next season they don’t rest, they want to score 30 or 40 again. We have to admire that and be happy to have him and enjoy it.
“If he reaches that level it will be even better because everyone knows how important Alan Shearer was for English football and for the Premier League.”
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has come closest to catching Shearer in recent times, though his final tally of 208 for the Red Devils and Everton still fell 52 short.
Of players still currently in the Premier League, only Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe has scored more goals than Aguero, managing 162 across an array of clubs.
Harry Kane is third behind Aguero among current players with 113.
Can Sergio Aguero catch Alan Shearer to become the Premier League’s all-time top scorer?
As previously mentioned, of the all-time top 10 goalscorers in Premier League history, only Defoe and Aguero are still playing in the division with the English striker currently struggling for game time at Bournemouth. So no player will, realistically, be pulling away from Aguero on his ascent up the list, with three more goals needed to see him leapfrog both Les Ferdinand and Michael Owen into eighth.
Prior to the start of the current season, Aguero had scored 143 goals across seven years in the Premier League with Manchester City, averaging 20.4 per campaign.
Were the Argentine to keep scoring at this rate, Aguero would overtake Shearer at the end of the 2023/24 season – three years after his current contract ends at City.
But Aguero has suffered from injury problems throughout his City career, meaning the striker does not play every Premier League game.
As a result, the 148 goals Aguero has scored have come from 213 appearances, at an average of 0.69 per game.
Continuing this average would see Aguero take 162 games to reach Shearer – roughly four years assuming he plays every game – which would come at some point during the 2022/23 season, needing just a two-year extension to his current City deal.
