Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello believes the club need to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi “immediately.”
Los Blancos have struggled to find the back of the net since superstar Cristiano Ronaldo left the club for Juventus during the summer transfer window.
Julen Lopetegui’s side are currently on a four-match scoreless streak, having fired blanks against Alaves, CSKA Moscow, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla in recent weeks.
As such, Capello has now urged his former club to pounce for Argentine marksman Icardi, who has so far netted five goals across all competitions this season, including two in the Champions League.
“I am a fan of his,” Capello told Radio Rai.
“He is a specialist in the penalty area, as was Cristiano Ronaldo, and if you put three balls in the area he hits all three.
“If I were Real Madrid, I would sign him immediately.”
At this stage of the season last year, Real had netted 15 goals in La Liga, compared to the 12 they have scored this campaign, with the Portuguese forward contributing to just one at that time. But Lopetegui will not have Zinedine Zidane’s luxury of an in-form Ronaldo coming to life later in the season.
Despite joining the club in the summer, Lopetegui is already under increasing pressure, and anything other than a win against Levante this weekend will see the Spaniard come in for more intense criticism and scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
Icardi in Milan
Since joining the Nerazzurri from Sampdoria in 2013, the Rosario-born striker has flourished at the San Siro.
To date, Icardi – who will see his present contract expire in 2021 – has played 190 matches across all competitions for the club, scoring 112 goals in the process.
The 25-year-old has also clinched the Capocannoniere (Serie A Top Scorer) on two occasions with Inter; first in 2015 with 22 goals, and also last season, which saw him net an incredible 29 goals.
