Lacazette prefers Ligue 1 ‘supporters’ compared to Premier League ‘spectators’

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette believes the atmosphere in French stadiums is far superior to those in England.

Lacazette, 27, has admitted that he misses the passionate atmospheres in Ligue 1, and offered a brutal assessment of English fans, referring to them as “spectators” rather than “supporters.”

He is currently in his second year in the Premier League having joined the Gunners in the 2017 summer window from boyhood club Lyon for a reported £37.7m.

The France international failed to match the goalscoring heights of his Les Gones career last term, but has since acclimated expertly to the demands of the league and is in a rich vein of form at present.

The marksman has scored four goals in his last five matches across all competitions, and is enjoying life in north London, but he has confessed he would love to once-more experience the aura that fans give off in France.

Lacazette told Le Progres: “I miss Ligue 1’s atmosphere. In England, the fans are more spectators than supporters. There’s a better atmosphere in French stadiums.”

Despite his current form, Lacazette has so far failed to reinstate himself into Didier Deschamps’ France squad, with former Gunners team-mate Olivier Giroud ahead of him in the pecking order.

France face Germany on Tuesday night in a fierce Nations League match at the Stade de France.

There was huge excitement around the signing of Lacazette last year, and while he did manage to net 17 goals across all competitions, the Gunners fans would have been hoping he would at least break the 20-goal mark.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival from Borussia Dortmund in January would have threatened to leave Lacazette on the periphery of first-team action, but from April onwards the duo formed a formidable partnership.

The Frenchman netted eight goals in 10 matches towards the end of last season, and that form has rolled on this campaign, with Lacazette and Aubameyang proving they can work alongside each other, scoring a combined 11 goals between them this term.

“It is good, he is like my brother,” Lacazette said. “We talk every day and we love working together.”

Arsenal next face Leicester City on home turf when the Premier League returns to action this weekend.
