Every Premier League club ranked by their creator-in-chief this season

Every team needs a creative player, a figure who can fashion a path to goal when needed.

And indeed, every Premier League club possesses a creator-in-chief – but it isn’t always who you think it might be.

We’ve had a look at the player who has created the most chances for all 20 Premier League sides so far this season and ranked them accordingly.

If two players have created the same amount of chances, we’ve ranked them by their assists. And if there’s another draw, it goes down to minutes played – the fewer the better.

Here are the results.

20. Huddersfield

Most chances created: Aaron Mooy (9)

Assists: 0

Minutes played: 630

The fact that Huddersfield’s most creative player has no assists is indicative of the club’s ongoing problems up front. The Terriers have found the net just four times so far this term, and none of those goals have been scored by a striker.

19. Cardiff

Most chances created: Sean Morrison (9)

Assists: 2

Minutes played: 720

Cardiff’s best avenue to goal appears to be the long throws of Morrison. Cardiff’s captain is the only centre-back on this list and he already has more assists than some of the country’s best players.

18. Burnley

Most chances created: Johann Berg Gudmundsson (9)

Assists: 4

Minutes played: 556

Burnley clearly aren’t forging enough goalscoring opportunities, but Gudmundsson has provided an assist with four of the nine chances he has created, which is an impressive ratio.

17. Leicester

Most chances created: Ben Chilwell (10)

Assists: 0

Minutes played: 720

Chilwell’s ability to get forward from left-back earned him a call-up to latest England squad. However, he will be hoping Leicester’s strikers can up their game so his assist numbers can increase.

16. Crystal Palace

Most chances created: Andros Townsend (10)

Assists: 0

Minutes played: 688

Like some of the aforementioned teams, Palace’s lack of a clinical striker is doing their creative players, such as Townsend, a disservice. Only Cardiff and Huddersfield have scored fewer goals than Roy Hodgson’s side.

15. Southampton

Most chances created: Nathan Redmond (11)

Assists: 0

Minutes played: 720

Yet another player who tops his club’s creative charts but is yet to provide an assist. Dusan Tadic’s exit has put even more pressure on Redmond to create chances.

14. Man United

Most chances created: Paul Pogba (12)

Assists: 2

Minutes played: 693

Alexis Sanchez has also created 12 chances for United in the Premier League this term, but Pogba trumps his teammate when it comes to assists. Regardless, Mourinho must be in the market for more creative players.

13. Arsenal

Most chances created: Aaron Ramsey (12)

Assists: 3

Minutes played: 502

Mest Ozil is usually way out ahead in terms of creativity for Arsenal, but Ramsey – who is expected to leave the Gunners at the end of the season – is Unai Emery’s current creator-in-chief.

12. Wolves

Most chances created: Joao Moutinho (13)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 705

One of the Premier League’s surprise packages, Wolves are prospering from possessing a number of technically adept players, including Moutinho.

11. Newcastle

Most chances created: Jonjo Shelvey (13)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 450

Shelvey’s range of passing has seen him create 13 chances for his Newcastle teammates so far, and it would probably be more if not for injuries.

10. Tottenham

Most chances created: Kieran Trippier (14)

Assists: 2

Minutes played: 616

Following his set-piece exploits for England at the World Cup, Trippier has been trusted with more free-kick and corner duties ahead of Christian Eriksen at Tottenham. The right-back also produces plenty of crosses from open play.

9. Brighton

Most chances created: Anthony Knockaert (14)

Assists: 3

Minutes played: 678

We’re starting to get into impressive number territory now. Knockaert’s propensity to cut in from the right and whip dangerous left-footed crosses into the box is bearing fruit at Brighton.

8. Fulham

Most chances created: Jean Michael Seri (16)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 672

Fulham are creating enough chances to win games, partly thanks to Seri’s inventiveness in midfield. But they need to plug the gaps at the back – the Londoners have conceded the most goals in the top-flight (21) so far.

7. Liverpool

Most chances created: Mohamed Salah (17)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 674

Much has been said about Salah’s slow start to the season in front of goal. But he remains a productive player for Liverpool having created 17 chances. His solitary assist perhaps says more about his teammates’ finishing than his own.

6. Watford

Most chances created: Jose Holebas (17)

Assists: 4

Minutes played: 714

The joint-highest assister on this list is Holebas, who has made a quietly impressive start to the campaign with Watford.

5. West Ham

Most chances created: Felipe Anderson (20)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 675

West Ham have been crying out for an imaginative attacking midfielder and they look to have found one in Felipe Anderson. The Brazilian is slowly but surely adapting to Premier League football.

4. Bournemouth

Most chances created: Ryan Fraser (21)

Assists: 3

Minutes played: 696

Arguably the biggest contributor to Bournemouth’s shock rise to sixth in the table, Fraser has been excellent for the Cherries and has already won his club’s Player of the Month award twice this season.

3. Man City

Most chances created: David Silva (22)

Assists: 0

Minutes played: 511

It’s hardly a surprise to see David Silva near the top of a creativity-based list, but it’s certainly surprising to find out his formidable performances haven’t resulted in a single assist. That’s bound to change soon.

2. Chelsea

Most chances created: Willian (22)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 483

Willian has been rotated with Pedro by new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, and his lack of minutes compared to some of the others players on this list makes his ranking even more outstanding.

1. Everton

Most chances created: Gylfi Sigurdsson (23)

Assists: 1

Minutes played: 658

Sigurdsson scored his fourth league goal of the season with a stunning strike against Leicester City earlier this month. The Iceland international looks back to his best after a difficult first campaign at Goodison Park, and his creativity is helping Everton to gradually climb the table.
