Spain manager Luis Enrique believes Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri could end up matching or surpassing Sergio Busquets.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder recently made his international debut in La Roja’s 6-0 humbling of World Cup runners-up Croatia.
Rodri, who came on for Busquets with just over 30 minutes left on the clock, has been backed by Enrique to follow in the path trodden by his more illustrious teammate and countryman.
“I have already spoken about their similarities,” he told reporters.
“It’s not good to give too much praise and he is very young, but Rodri comes across as very professional and prepared mentally.
“He can reach Busquets’ level and maybe surpass it. Who knows what limits he has?”
The lowdown on Rodri
A graduate of Atlético’s youth program the Madrid-born footballer swapped the Spanish capital for Villarreal and that’s where he made his senior professional debut under former manager Paco López.
He’d go on to make no fewer than 84 appearances for the Yellow Submarines in all competitions registering two goals and creating six for his teammates.
His performances weren’t going unnoticed and this summer Atléti decided to bring him back and to date he’s featured across seven matches for Diego Simeone’s team.
