The former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince believes players resentful of current boss Jose Mourinho are downing tools so pressure can mount on him being sacked.
United have failed to win any of their last four matches in all competitions including elimination from this season’s League Cup at the hands of Derby County and humbling 3-1 loss at West Ham which leaves them nine points behind Premier League pacesetters Manchester City and Liverpool.
Amid this recent poor run of form has been a seeming power struggle between Mourinho and the club’s most expensive acquisition Paul Pogba, with reports suggesting a fractured dressing room which has disappointed Ince who feels certain players are not pulling their weight because it will accelerate Mourinho’s departure from Old Trafford.
“It baffles me that Manchester United players are choosing when they want to put effort into playing for their club,” he told Paddy Power.
“Every player in the shirt should be putting in effort and showing desire, even if you don’t get the result. There’s no excuse for not putting in effort. These are professional footballers, on astronomical wages, playing for one of the biggest clubs ever.
“It doesn’t sit right with me that it looks like they can’t be bothered. Yes, there might be a couple of players who are trying – but you need the whole team to be contributing.
“It looks to me as though they’re not interested in playing for Jose Mourinho anymore.”
“When I played for the club, I saw it as an honour and although I didn’t always play well, no one could ever accuse me of not putting the work in,” he added.
“What I find disappointing is those players are happy for Mourinho to take the blame. They should be admitting the fact that they are responsible for the way they’re playing.
“They’re throwing him under the bus, despite putting in poor performances every week. And they’re getting away with it. Some players want Man United to get beat, just so that there’s pressure on Mourinho to be sacked.
Mourinho at Old Trafford
Mourinho assumed control of United in 2016 following Louis van Gaal’s erratic two years in charge and has, to date, overseen no fewer than 130 matches.
Under him, United have won 78 of those contests, giving him a 60% win percentage, while also losing 25 times, including last season’s FA Cup final against former club Chelsea.
He’s picked up three pieces of silverware to date – the 2016 Community Shield, 2017 League Cup and 2017 Europa League – while seeing his team register 228 goals (1.75 per game) and conceding just 108 (one every 108 minutes).
