Fabio Capello reveals the two centre-backs Jose Mourinho really wanted Man Utd to sign

Fabio Capello claims Jose Mourinho wanted to sign two Serie A centre-backs – Milan Skriniar and Kalidou Koulibaly – for Manchester United over the summer.

United have lost three of their seven Premier League games so far this season and Mourinho has responded to those defeats by heavily rotating at centre-back.

The likes of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof have all been in and out of the team, while Mourinho has even experimented with Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay in a back three.

A move for Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld was mooted throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise and United didn’t sign a new centre-back before the deadline.

And according to former England manager Capello, Mourinho was targeting Inter’s Skriniar and Napoli’s Koulibaly but neither player ended up at Old Trafford.

“I met Mourinho during a meeting between managers last summer,” Capello told Sky Sports in Italy (via Goal). “He wanted to sign two defenders, one was Milan Skriniar, the other one was Koulibaly.”

Italy’s finest?

Skrniar and Koulibaly were both in Champions League action Wednesday night – in fact, they have played all 180 minutes of European football for their respective clubs so far this term.

Koulibaly and Napoli are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League following their 1-0 victory over Liverpool, while Skriniar has been part of an Inter defence that has shipped a goal in each game against Tottenham and PSV Eindhoven.

Napoli host Sassuolo in Serie A this weekend before Inter travel to SPAL.
