Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants his side to be “closer” to Liverpool in English football.
The two sides meet on Sunday in the Premier League with neither side having lost a single league game this season. The teams are locked on points having both won six of their opening seven games in the league.
Manchester City are top by virtue of having scored a whopping 21 goals so far but Pep Guardiola is taking nothing for granted against a side that beat his Manchester City team three times last season.
The City boss knows his adversary very well having also faced Jurgen Klopp as a manager during their time at Bayern Munich and Dortmund respectively, but the Spaniard says he wants his team to get closer to being the kind of club with a history as rich in success at Liverpool.
“They are a top side in the way they play. Liverpool beat a lot of sides not just City last season.
“Liverpool is one of two greatest teams in England. We try to be close to them. They are top side and we try to be closer every time.”
The start of Manchester City’s legacy in England?
Manchester City had only won the English top flight twice before it was rebranded as the Premier League whereas Liverpool had secured 18 titles.
Since then Manchester City have achieved three Premier League crowns, a feat that Liverpool have not yet managed to complete.
The fact that Manchester City are beginning to create their own legacy in the English game, similar to the way Liverpool did in the 1970s and 80s was not lost on Guardiola.
“When you look at their (Liverpool’s) history in the Premier League or in English football we want to be closer to them and we are.
“We should be so proud.”
Despite the Reds falling just short of winning the Champions League last season Guardiola believes Klopp’s side deserve all the accolades they have been getting.
“They deserve their praise for the way they play. We got a lot of praise for our play last season but they deserve it.”
The two sides meet for the first time this season on Sunday and will know that a win for either team will take them three points clear of each other at the top of the table.
