Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon names Anfield in his top three stadiums ever

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has placed Liverpool‘s Anfield in the top three stadiums he has played in.   

Buffon, 40, has played in some of the most iconic grounds in world football during a trophy-laden career that spans over two decades.

The Juventus legend made his debut for Parma in 1995 and has since gone on to amass nearly 900 appearances across all competitions, including 176 caps for the Italian national side.

During that time, the veteran shot-stopper has plied his trade in some of the finest edifices world football has to offer, including the Bernabeu and the San Siro to name but two.

However, Buffon has now confessed that the intimidating atmospheres of Liverpool’s Anfield, Rangers’ Ibrox and Fenerbahce’s Sukru Saracoglu, have made them the best stadiums to play in for him.

Buffon answered questions from fans on his Instagram story (via Football Italia), and he was asked for the stadium which most excited him: “Definitely Anfield, in Liverpool, that was one of the few stadiums – along with Rangers in Glasgow and Fenerbahce in Istanbul – where there was such commotion for the first 15-20 minutes that I had trouble concentrating.”

Buffon further went on to rate his best game, and the gloveman unsurprisingly listed his appearance in the World Cup final triumph during the 2006 tournament as his greatest match.

He added: “The best game? Every final is pure emotion, but if I have to say one I’d say the World Cup final, even if that’s slightly predictable.”

The Tuscany-born ‘keeper will now have a two week period of respite and recuperation as he prepares for the Parisians’ next match against Amiens SC after the international break at the Parc des Princes.

Buffon retired from international duty in May; the same time he announced his departure from the Old Lady. Italy clash with Poland on Sunday in a Uefa Nations League match.

The one major trophy that has eluded Buffon during his career is the Champions League title, and so, he decided to cut his teeth in Ligue 1 on the proviso that PSG would be competing in the latter stages of Europe’s elite competition.

Having also eluded the Parisians, the club’s hierarchy moved to appoint German tactician Thomas Tuchel in the summer, with the belief that the former Borussia Dortmund manager can guide the club to continental dominance.

Buffon is yet to play for his new club in the competition, with the Italian currently serving a ban following his infamous altercation with referee Michael Oliver last term, though he will be available for PSG’s trip to Napoli on Champions League matchday four.
