Man Utd claim Mourinho sack reports are “nonsense”

Manchester United have reportedly dismissed claims of manager Jose Mourinho’s impending departure, labelling them as ‘nonsense’.

On Friday evening, a report published by the Daily Mirror emerged claiming Mourinho would be sacked as United manager regardless of the result when the Red Devils play Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

By sacking Mourinho post-Newcastle, United would give themselves two weeks to find a new manager and get them implemented due to the international break getting underway.

But, United have insisted Mourinho is not about to be sacked.

“It’s all nonsense,” a spokesperson for the club top Omnisport (via FourFourTwo).

United are without a win in their past four games across all competitions, with two wins and two draws.

The poor run started with a 1-1 home draw to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League which preceded a Carabao Cup third-round exit at the hands of Championship side Derby County – again at Old Trafford.

Mourinho’s side then lost 3-1 to West Ham United at the London Stadium last weekend, before a goalless draw with Valencia in the Champions League at home – a result greeted with boos from the United fans.

United’s poor results have been coupled with reported unrest among the squad, with Paul Pogba being highlighted among pundits.

The Frenchman had captained United at times at the start of the season but Mourinho then announced Pogba would not do so again following negative comments on the draw against Wolves.

And, after the Carabao Cup exit to Derby County, television cameras caught a frosty moment between Pogba and Mourinho at United’s training ground, adding to the doubts over both of their futures.

Where has it gone wrong for Mourinho at Manchester United?

The talks of Mourinho’s usual ‘third-season syndrome’ aside, something is seriously going wrong at Manchester United.

Finishing second in the Premier League last season, United’s start to the current campaign is someway off how they began 2017/18.

United are already nine points behind where there were at this stage last season, as well as eight positions in the table.

After seven matches in 2017/18, United were second on 19 points, behind Manchester City only on goal difference. The Red Devils had won six and drawn one of their games, scoring 21 and conceding just two goals.

In comparison, United have kicked off the current campaign with three wins, three defeats and one draw, scoring 10 and conceded 12 – the club’s joint-worst start to a Premier League season after David Moyes’ also led the Red Devils to 10 points from seven games in 2013/14.
