Netherlands 3-0 Germany: Every player rated as van Dijk and Depay delight in historic Dutch win

For the first time since Euro ’92 the Netherlands recorded a competitive win over their long-standing rivals Germany.

A 3-0 victory in Amsterdam saw Oranje record their biggest win over the four-time World champions.

Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum inflicted the damage on Joachim Löw’s men who haven’t recovered from their woeful summer. As the Dutch celebrate there is soul-searching to be had for their beaten foes.

Here’s how the players rated.

Netherlands

Jasper Cillessen – 6– Pulled off a stunning save to deny Müller in the first half.

Denzel Dumfries – 7– Aside from one uncomfortable moment looked at home on his international debut and is likely to feature again.

Matthijs de Ligt – 7– Shook off a nervy start, in which he was was guilty of giving the ball away, and became a reliable presence.

Virgil van Dijk – 8– Often found himself in the right place which also summed up his goal.

Daley Blind – 6– Ended the game in central midfield Blind, as custom, did a solid job for the team what he lacks in pure pace he makes up for in positional awareness.

Marten de Roon – 5– Got amongst the German midfield but did not do much otherwise.

Frenkie de Jong – 7– Was his usual forward-thinking buccaneering self and grew in stature and influence as the contest went on.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 7– Hustled and bustled, as you’d expect from him, and his endeavour paid off with a very late and deserved goal.

Steven Bergwijn – 6– His decision making let him down, other than that can look back on a positive debut.

Memphis Depay – 9– Never stopped running, or pressing the German backline, and the Lyon man got his just rewards late on.

Ryan Babel – 5 –Always willing to be involved but looked out of step.

Substitutes:

Quincy Promes (on for Ryan Babel 68) – 7– Came on and teeded up his pal Memphis for his goal.

Arnaut Danjuma (on for Steven Bergwijn 68) – 6– Had a job to do so we didn’t see everything Danjuma is capable of.

Nathan Ake (on for Frenkie de Jong 77) – 6– Slotted into left-back and played an instrumental role in Memphis’ goal.

Germany

Manuel Neuer – 4– Caught napping for the Netherlands’ opening goal and powerless towards the end.

Matthias Ginter – 5– Was useful going forward.

Jérôme Boateng – 4–Another dispiriting performance though it started with so much promise.

Mats Hummels – 5– Before the late Dutch charge he never really looked to be in constant trouble so occasionally took it on himself to build Germany’s attack.

Jonas Hector – 5– Always offering himself as an outlet unlucky his crosses weren’t expertly met.

Joshua Kimmich – 6–Looks at home playing in front of the defence and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in.

Thomas Müller – 4– Continually popping up everywhere, and never stopped talking, but lacked his familiar killer instinct.

Emre Can – 3– The game simply passed him by, either guilty of misplacing the ball or committing unnecessary fouls.

Toni Kroos – 5– Played in his usual deep-lying role with everything positive from Germany coming through him.

Timo Werner – 5– For much of the game he looked to be a thorn but ultimately fell by the wayside.

Mark Uth – 5– Not a debut to remember for the ex-Heerenveen striker who did everything but trouble the Dutch goalkeeper.

Substitutes:

Leroy Sané (on for Thomas Müller 57) – 5– Energetic as soon as he came on, must wonder what he needs to do to be starting.

Julian Draxler (on for Emre Can 57) – 4– Tried to offer something different by being direct but it was too little too late.

Julian Brandt (on for Mark Uth 68) – 4– Never got into the game, though wasn’t his fault.
