Ahead of Liverpool‘s clash with Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp hails Pep Guardiola as the world’s greatest manager.
Despite Manchester City’s record-breaking campaign last season which saw them capture the league title with a century of points, Liverpool got the better of City in three out of the four games they played across all competitions.
City pasted Liverpool 5-0 in their first league clash last season, but the Reds enjoyed the rub of the green after that with a 4-3 victory at Anfield and would go on to defeat the Citizens 5-1 over two legs in the Champions League quarter-final.
Despite Klopp’s recent victories over his rival, he insists that he’s a huge admirer of the Spaniard and believes he is the best manager in the world.
“I’ve said it a few times, that if we couldn’t be champions last season then Manchester City are very welcome,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “They had an outstanding season, I respect it a lot – I love it, actually. Watching them is really good.
“My respect for Pep Guardiola couldn’t be bigger, he is the world’s best manager and that makes it so difficult, but so exciting to play his teams.”
Klopp added that despite the admiration he has for Guardiola, defeating one of his teams is a moment to savour.
“I really like the work they do, but on the other side if you play against a team of their quality, the win is even sweeter,” he said. “That’s how it is, and in that moment it’s a big relief.
Man City returned to the top of the table last week after Liverpool and Chelsea shared the points last Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
The result of today’s game could provide an early indicator of whom will win the title this season and the Reds are more likely to claim three points on Sunday after not losing a home game to City in the Premier League since May 2003.
If Liverpool and City draw it could benefit Chelsea if they manage to defeat Southampton in Sunday’s earlier game held on the south coast. The Blues haven’t lost a game at St Mary’s in the Premier League since March 2013.
