Antoine Griezmann has revealed that he feels ‘Uruguayan” ahead of France’s clash with the South American side this weekend.
The French face Uruguay on Friday afternoon after impressing in their 4-3 World Cup round of 16 victory over Argentina.
In contrast, Uruguay overcame Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal side 2-1 in a match that saw the headlines stolen by the talents of Edinson Cavani, who score the two goals to seal the Uruguayan’s progression.
The match is hotting up to being one of the most anticipating fixtures of the competition so far, with France considered slight favourites against a well-organised Uruguay defence.
One man who has admitted that he is an Uruguay fan is none other than France forward Griezmann, who has revealed that due to the close relationship he has with his Atletico Madrid teammates, he has a soft spot for them.
“A real Uruguay fan? Yes of course, I have many friends who play for them,” Griezmann is cited as saying by Football Espana.
“I even asked (Atletico teammate) Diego Godin for one of Edinson Cavani’s shirts and now I have it!
“Furthermore, the Uruguayan flag has been the picture in my WhatsApp profile.
“At Real Sociedad, Martín Lasarte was Uruguayan. And when I started in the first team, there was another Uruguayan striker, Carlos Bueno.
“We naturally moved closer to each other. We both played in attack. He would often bring me back to work or pick me up in the morning because I did not have a car at the time.”
If France are to be successful at this year’s World Cup tournament in Russia and finish as Champions for the first time since 1998, they may beat as many as four South American teams before lifting the trophy.
Having defeated Peru in the group stages and then Argentina in the round of 16, a victory over Uruguay could set up a tasty semi-final clash with Brazil if they can overcome Belgium.
