Chelsea newcomer Jorginho reveals his best position

Chelsea new boy Jorginho has opened up about his ideal position on the pitch, giving Blues’ fans a glimmer of what to expect this season.

Jorginho, 26, completed a sensational switch to west London for a fee in the region of £50m after the Brazilian-born Italian looked set to link up with Pep Guardiola in Manchester.

The Blues thwarted Guardiola’s attempts to sign the midfield maestro, luring him away from Napoli with the prospect of playing under the guidance of former coach Maurizio Sarri.

The Sarrismo philosophy has already left Stamford Bridge teeming with excitement this summer, and Jorginho will only add to that optimism as he is crucial to the system of the Italian tactician – and he has told the club’s official website exactly what to expect, saying: “I like playing just outside of my own penalty box, the player who receives the ball and organises the game.”

On the topic of Chelsea’s new manager Maurizio Sarri, Jorginho said: “He is someone who does wonderful work, he is right on top of everything that is going on on the pitch.

“When the weekend comes around and you have a game, you start that game knowing how every situation is going to pan out on the field offensively and defensively, and that is something that really helps you in your work.”

Jorginho continued: “He is a very straight-forward person, he is easy to communicate with, he is very approachable and that is something that also helps the players.”

The 26-year-old also feels adamant that the tactician has helped further his game, saying: “Absolutely. I think he had a really big influence on my development as player, exactly because of that – he teaches a lot about the game and how you see the game on the field of play, and that helped me to grow.”

The midfielder also believes his style of play fits in perfectly with how Sarri sets up his teams.

“I think I have the right characteristics as a footballer for the type of football that he likes to play, and the type of football that he teaches and passes on to his team. When we were together at Napoli, it was a case of me taking on his mentality and putting that together with the characteristics I have as a footballer.”

Chelsea fans will get their first taste of Sarri’s football when the club take on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on August 5, with Jorginho particularly eager to show Guardiola exactly what he missed out on.

The Blues then tee off their Premier League campaign with an away trip to West Yorkshire as they clash with David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town on August 11.

One factor that benefitted Antonio Conte’s first season in west London was the absence of Champions League football; the Italian guided Chelsea to Premier League success without the distraction of Europe.

Sarri will also enjoy his maiden campaign without Champions League football, though the club will face a less competitive but equally burdensome season in the Europa League.
