Iker Casillas jumps to defence of Loris Karius

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has come out in defence of Liverpool‘s Loris Karius after the German endured another mistake in pre-season.

Karius was a fault for Borussia Dortmund’s third goal as the Schwarzgelben came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-1 in the International Champions Cup.

The mistake comes just months after the German made two costly errors in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, first rolling the ball directly to Karim Benzema before fumbling Gareth Bale’s long-range effort.

Karius quickly came under fire from football fans but Casillas believes the goalkeeper is unfairly treated and should be left alone.

“Will this attack on Loris Karius ever end? I’m talking about him like so many other goalkeepers,” he wrote on Twitter.

“There are many more serious problems in the world… f***! Leave the kid alone! He’s also a person. As we all are!”

Karius’ time as number one goalkeeper at Liverpool are limited now with the club having brought in Alisson from Roma for a world-record initial fee of £56m and manager Jurgen Klopp confirming that the Brazilian will be taking the starting spot upon his arrival.

Loris Karius hits back at critics after another goalkeeping mistake

The mistake was not the first Karius had made during pre-season, as footage circled the internet of a howler during a warm-up ahead of Liverpool’s game against Chester and then a mistake against Tranmere Rovers which led to a goal.

But in a post on his Instagram story after the game, which has since been deleted, Karius hit back at his critics with the perfect response – not rising to the level of criticism he has received since the Champions League final.

He posted: “Whatever it is that is happening in your life to hold this much anger and hate, I pray that it passes and good things come to you.”

Before the Champions League final, Karius had enjoyed a good season with Liverpool, making a name for himself as the club’s number one.

In the Champions League, the German kept more clean sheets (six) than any other goalkeeper, conceding 13 goals in 12 games in the lead up to the final.

Karius had also not made a single error in the Champions League before the final, but ultimately ended the campaign with two – the costliest of mistakes at the final hurdle.
