England won a knockout match at a major tournament for the first time in 12 years as they beat Colombia on penalties in the last-16 of the World Cup.
After an edgy, goalless first half, England took the lead from the penalty spot after 57 minutes as Harry Kane punished Carlos Sanchez’s poor foul.
And just as England looked to have won the game, Yerry Mina rose highest from a corner in injury time to pull Colombia level and take the tie to extra-time.
The 30 minutes brought no winner, with Dier scoring the winning penalty and breaking Colombian hearts.
England will now face Sweden in the quarter-final on Saturday, but first, here’s how the players rated.
Colombia
David Ospina – 5 – Dealt well with set pieces when called upon but had little to do in terms of open play. Beaten by Kane’s penalty in normal time and the shootout. Saved Henderson’s spot kick.
Santiago Arias – 5 – Was unable to have much of an influence on the game despite Colombia attacking down his flank as Cuadrado took most of the responsibilities.
Davinson Sanchez – 7 – Slightly overshadowed by his fantastic partner, Sanchez helped to keep the England attackers quiet in the first half. Did well to prevent a certain tap-in for Kane with 20 minutes to go, blocking Lingard’s pass across the box.
Yerry Mina – 8 – Going into the game, six of England’s eight goals had been scored from set pieces but the Three Lions had no such luck against Colombia with Yerry Mina there to deal with every ball put into the box. Looked to be man-marking Sterling in the first half and gave his opponent no quarter to get ahold of the game. And when Colombia looked to be going out, his header brought them back and earned extra-time.
Key stat: Yerry Mina is just the second player in Colombia’s history to have scored in at least three consecutive World Cup games, after James Rodriguez in 2014.
Johan Mojica – 6 – The busier of Colombia’s full-backs defensively with Trippier looking to get forward lots. But was quiet in attack as his side favoured the other flank.
Wilmar Barrios – 4 – Dealt well defensively when needed and droped almost in line with his defenders when Colombia were in possession to allow other players to push forward. Was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off for heading Henderson’s chin, though the England man did exaggerate the contact slightly.
Carlos Sanchez – 3 – Brought down Kane inside the penalty area for a rugby tackle following a set piece which resulted to England’s goal.
Jefferson Lerma – 4 – Did not have the best game as England controlled the midfield. Was taken off for Bacca when Colombia went a goal down.
Juan Quintero – 5 – Had Colombia’s first half-chance, but his first-time effort was poor and scuffed wide. Another shot from outside the area just before half-time but it was straight at Pickford.
Juan Cuadrado – 4 – Had a quiet first half as England started well but slowly worked his way into the match. Missed a good opportunity to bring Colombia level following Walker’s mistake but saw his effort sail well over. Scored his penalty well.
Radamel Falcao – 4 – Had little to work with with England enjoying more of the time on the ball but did not have a sniff at goal in the first half. Converted his penalty well.
Substitutes:
Carlos Bacca (for Lerma 62) – 4 – Booked within minutes of coming on.
Mateus Uribe (for Carlos Sanchez 79) – 5 – Helped Colombia control the game a bit more than they had and his saved shot earned the corner from which his side equalised. Missed his penalty
Luis Muriel (for Quintero 88) – 6 – Was effective after coming on with Colombia looking for an equaliser and his freshness was useful in extra-time as the game became stretched. Scored in the shootout.
Cristian Zapata (for Arias 115) – N/A – A late sub.
England
Jordan Pickford – 7 – Had little to do throughout the match but produced a world-class save which had looked to deny Colombia, only be to beaten from the corresponding corner. Saved Bacca’s penalty to put England on the brink.
Kyle Walker – 6 – Composed on the ball at the back and was on hand to tidy up when required. Did well to pressure Colombia wide when an early break was on following an England corner. Lucky to not see his complacency punished with 10 minutes to go.
John Stones – 6 – The more quiet of England’s centre-back trio but Stones was calm on the ball and dealt well with Colombia’s sporadic first-half attacks.
Harry Maguire – 7 – Enjoyed himself on the ball both as England worked out from the back and on attack. Was not afraid to push forward while in possession.
Kieran Trippier – 7 – Another good game for the Bury Beckham. Trippier set up the first chance of the match with an overlapping run and a good cross to the back post for Kane. Beaten on the post by Mina’s header. Scored his penalty.
Jesse Lingard – 7 – Did well to move along the lines in front of the Colombia defence and linked up with Trippier in attack. Had two chances to help England double their lead but could not find a way through.
Jordan Henderson – 8 – Commanded the midfield for England and made sure their possession was meaningful and controlled. Picked up a silly booking in the aftermath of England’s penalty. Missed his penalty in the shootout.
Dele Alli – 5 – Clearly not 100% fit as he threatened to have to be taken off near half-time. Could have much of an effect in attack as a result. Did improve after half-time as Colombia became more stretched but taken on near the end as England needed to hold firm.
Ashley Young – 5 – Quietly got forward at times but his was not the favoured flank with Trippier much better.
Raheem Sterling – 6 – England spent a lot of the first half trying to get the ball to Sterling’s feet and on occasion he did well with it. But, by no fault of his own, he was marked well by Mina and struggled to make a deciding impact.
Harry Kane – 7 – Had the first chance of the match following a good cross from Trippier but his header looped just over the bar. Dropped deep to dictate play which helped England control possession but may have cut them off in attack. Won and scored a penalty in the second half to give the Three Lions the lead. Scored in the shootout.

Ket stat: Harry Kane is the first player to score in six consecutive England appearances since Tommy Lawton in 1939.
Substitutes:
Eric Dier (for Alli 80) – 6 – Brought on to help England see out the game but looked complacent at times and had to play longer than Southgate would have liked with extra-time. Redeemed himself with the winning penalty.
Jamie Vardy (for Sterling 88) – 0 – Did not add much to the game after coming on as Colombia pressed the England defence. But his influence grew in the second half of extra time as Colombia’s defenders grew tired.
Danny Rose (for Young 102) – 0 – Added some energy to England’s left and went close to giving England the lead after good link up play with Henderson.
Marcus Rashford (for Walker 112) – N/A – Did not have much time to impact the game but did score his penalty.
Referee: Mark Geiger – 3 – Booked Barrios in the first half when a replays showed a red should have been shown for heading Henderson’s chin. As the emotions built up following his penalty decision, lost control of the game. Tried to retain that control by cautioning for the smallest of infringements for both sides.
