Jose Mourinho has criticised Harry Maguire for “diving” and “exaggerating” during England’s Round of 16 victory over Colombia at the World Cup.
Tempers flared during the match as the Colombia players responded to a number of decisions that went against them, including the penalty Harry Kane put away early in the second half.
American referee Mark Geiger struggled to retain control of the game at points, booking six Colombians and two England players.
Maguire escaped punishment despite clashing with the opposition on a number of occasions and appearing to dive in the opposition penalty area early in the second half. Immediately after going down under no contact, however, Maguire was seen to wave apologetically at the referee.
Yet Mourinho believes the Leicester City defender was guilty of theatrics in Moscow.
“The negative thing for me was the fact… I think there is exaggeration on theatre by the players,” the Manchester United manager said on Russia Today’s coverage.
“I was surprised to see central defenders like Harry Maguire, normally he is a very honest guy, diving in the attacking box asking the referee for VAR.
“Every team has lots of diving, lots of pretending, lots of putting pressure on the referee. The game loses quality… and for me that was the negative point.”
Maguire has been praised for his performances so far in Russia, displays that have helped him cement a place in England’s back three ahead of the quarter-finals.
The 25-year-old joined Leicester from Hull City last summer and made 44 appearances across all competitions for the Foxes during his debut season.
He has played nine times for England to date and is expected to start in Saturday’s quarter-final against Sweden.
