Sweden vs England tips, stats, predictions and match preview

England continue their quest to bring football home with a quarter-final against Sweden on Saturday.

The Three Lions finally won a World Cup penalty shootout in their Round of 16 victory over Colombia just hours after Sweden edged past Switzerland.

Sweden vs England Tip 1: Half-time Draw/Full-time England @ 10/3

The group-stage victories over Tunisia and Panama suggested England had been instructed to start quickly and open the scoring early – they scored in the 11th minute against Tunisia and bagged five goals before the break against Panama.

Since then, however, the Three Lions have failed to find the net in the first half against both Belgium and Colombia, completely drawing a blank in the final group game and waiting until the second period to make a breakthrough in the Round of 16.

Sweden have scored five of their six goals in the second halves of matches, so a goalless first half is definitely on the cards. If England can take the lead immediately after the break, the attention could switch to keeping Sweden out and securing victory.

Sweden vs England Tip 2: Under 2.5 goals @ 19/40

The last two meetings between England and Sweden have been goal fests. England’s 3-2 win at Euro 2012 was followed by a 4-3 friendly victory for Sweden in November 2012.

But it’s likely we’re set for a slightly less thrilling affair here. Both sides have had big wins at the World Cup already – England beat Panama 6-1 while Sweden won 3-0 against Mexico – but those results seem to have been anomalies.

Neither side has scored more than twice in any other game, while they both scraped through the Round of 16 by scoring just once. A tight contest with few goals appears likely.

Sweden vs England Tip 3: England to score a penalty @ 11/2

Sweden and England are responsible for taking five of the 28 penalties awarded up to the end of the Round of 16 at the current World Cup, scoring all five.

The introduction of VAR certainly seems to have had an effect on the number of spot-kicks, and England are particularly prone to fair treatment from the officials after a couple of Tunisian crimes went unpunished in the opening group game.

Harry Kane has taken all three of England’s penalties so far, scoring all of them. He has found the net with five of the six penalties he has taken in an England shirt, and he was also on target from the spot in the shootout against Colombia.
