Maurizio Sarri: I want Hazard to stay and improve at Chelsea

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has said he wants Eden Hazard to stay at the club and that he would like to help the Belgian improve as a player.

Hazard, 27, has been linked with a move away from the west London club and most recently has talked up a move to potential suitors Real Madrid.

And Sarri, who has just taken over the reins at Chelsea following the drawn-out sacking of Antonio Conte, has admitted he wants the forward to stay at the club.

Sarri described Hazard as “one of the top two or three European players” at a press conference on Wednesday, via BBC Sport.

The former Napoli boss said: “Hazard is a very high-level player. I hope that I will manage to improve him.”

Sarri also said how he will like to “have fun” with the forward in training.

“I would like to have fun during the week with him. This would mean very good results and mean we would have been very competitive during the season,” added the 59-year-old Italian.

But Sarri will wait to speak with Hazard on his return from holiday after Belgium got the semi-finals of the World Cup: “A telephone call without looking them in the eye would not give me any certainly.

“I’d like to meet them face to face. I would also like a player to come on the [training] pitch four or five days to have a clear idea.”

Hazard, meanwhile, told a journalist last Saturday when responding to the Real Madrid links: “You know my preferred destination.

“I can decide if I want to stay or go but Chelsea will make the final decision – if they want to let me go.”

Hazard scored 12 goals and made four assists in 34 Premier League games last season, 28 of which he started. He also played a starring role in Belgium’s third-place finish the World Cup, scoring three and assisting two.
