Uefa have announced teams playing in their main club competitions from next season onwards will be able to use a fourth substitute if the match goes into extra-time.
The amendment to football’s Laws of the Game has been sanctioned by the game’s lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), and will immediately come into effect.
Extra-time is used in the knockout phase – starting from round of 32 in the Europa League and round of 16 in the Champions League – after both teams cannot be separated following 180 minutes (comprising home and away legs).
Clubs, according to Uefa, will still only be able to use three substitutes from seven available during normal playing time.
Fifa, world football’s governing body, ahead of this summer’s World Cup approved the use of a fourth substitute in extra-time.
The Football Association have already permitted an extra substitute in the latter stages of the FA Cup, from the quarter-finals onwards, with Manchester City becoming the first club to take advantage – bringing Kelechi Iheanacho on for Raheem Sterling after 105 minutes – in their semi-final defeat to Arsenal in April 2017.
