Why the current England side are like Spain’s 2010 World Cup winners – Luis Garcia

Former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia has likened the current England team to Spain‘s 2010 World Cup-winning side.

England are set to play in the quarter-finals of the competition against Sweden on Saturday after edging past Colombia on penalties in the round-of-16.

The Three Lions were the joint-second top scorers in the group stages, scoring the same number of goals as hosts Russia (eight) and one fewer than Group G winners Belgium.

And Garcia has suggested England’s form is particularly impressive considering nobody gave Gareth Southgate’s men a chance going into the tournament.

“At least they are here,”said Garcia (via Goal), who made 20 appearances for the Spanish national team.

“They are continuing in this World Cup which is something many people probably wouldn’t say at the beginning of this competition.”

The 40-year-old went on to draw comparisons between Southgate’s England and the Spain side which won the World Cup in 2010.

“What I see different, and I can compare them to the Spanish team of 2010, they are young, they are young players in that team, they want to do something big for their country,” he said.

“They showed [against Colombia] that in the end, even though they couldn’t get the result in 90 minutes, they went through and that is what matters in these kinds of moments.”

England won their first ever World Cup penalty shootout against Colombia, adding to the hope the Three Lions can go all the way and win the competition for the first time since 1966.

Spain’s 2010 victory was also the only time they have ever won the World Cup – they were surprisingly knocked out by Russia in the Round of 16 this time around.
