Burnley have completed the signing of Joe Hart from Man City for £3.5m.
The former England No.1 joins Sean Dyche’s Burnley on a two-year deal with the option of an added season, and will challenge current first-choice ‘keeper Nick Pope along with Tom Heaton for the number one spot.
Pope, however, is out for three to six months after he dislocated his shoulder against Aberdeen in the Europa League, and Heaton has a calf strain.
Hart therefore could make his debut in Thursday’s Europa League qualifier against Istanbul Basaksehir.
The transfer means three goalkeepers considered to have been in contention for England’s goalkeeping jersey in recent years are all at the same club, as is talented youngster Anders Lindegaard.
Hart, 31, joins Burnley after spending 12 years at Man City, where he won two Premier Leagues.
The Shrewsbury-born player fell foul of Pep Guardiola, who decided in 2016 that the 75-capped England man wasn’t adept enough with the ball at his feet.
“Joe Hart’s contribution to Manchester City cannot be overstated,” said Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, via BBC Sport.
“His 12 years at the club have seen him produce some remarkable performances and heart-stopping saves that will live in the memory for a long time to come.
“He will rightly be regarded as a City legend in perpetuity.”
Hart spent last season on loan at West Ham, but made a number of errors and failed to get into Gareth Southgate’s semi-final-reaching England squad.
In the year before that he was at Serie A side Torino, where he made 37 appearances, though he failed to impress there too.
It’s been widely reported that Joe Hart accepted a considerable pay cut in order to move to Turf Moor.
How the fans reacted
