Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin says he chose not to join Manchester United for personal reasons.
The Uruguayan was linked to United this summer, with the Red Devils on the lookout for an experienced defender to join their squad.
Mourinho was left frustrated by the lack of signings this summer as some of United’s rivals spent big on improving their squads.
But some at United have suggested that the offer the club put together for Godin was used by the player as leverage to get a better deal at the Metropolitano.
However this is has been fervently denied by the defender.
Speaking ahead of Atletico’s European Super Cup match-up against Real Madrid in Tallinn, the Uruguayan, as reported by Sky Sports, said: “I have not renewed.”
“I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons, and I am only thinking about the final.
“But I have not extended my contract. I saw that news came out but I do not know where it came from.”
Godin joined Atletico in 2010 and has appeared in two Champions League finals for them and helped them win La Liga in 2014, having also won the Copa Rey a year earlier and secured last year’s Europa League title.

Manchester United were unable to secure another signing before the window shut, despite being linked with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.
Despite not signing a defender United did splash the cash on Brazilian midfielder Fred, who joined from Shakhtar Donetsk for £53 million, while also securing the services of highly rated full-back Diogo Dalot from Porto for just shy of £20 million.
Yet compared to the spending of Liverpool, who brought in Fabinho, Alisson, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri for a combined £163 million, it felt underwhelming to many United fans.
Meanwhile, Godin looks like he will remain with Atletico for the coming season as he looks to add the Super Cup to the list of trophies he has won since his arrival in Spain when they take on rivals Real this evening.
