Spanish Association of Footballers (AFE) president David Aganzo has confirmed that some La Liga players are threatening to go on strike over the league’s proposed US match.
La Liga announced, last week, that they had penned a 15-year deal which would see select Spanish games being hosted in America.
The announcement was initially met with much trepidation and it has now become clear that the league’s players, as well as many club officials, were not consulted on the matter.
The AFE, led by the likes of Sergio Ramos, Sergio Busquets, Koke and Joaquin, met recently to voice their displeasure about the decision.
And AFE president Aganzo, a former Real Madrid player, told reporters (via Football Espana): “The players are outraged, very surprised, and are all against it. It’s unanimous.
“The players don’t want to play overseas. Things have to be done in a more coherent way and with common sense.
“A decision of this magnitude, that affects players, referees and fans, was taken unilaterally and is a lack of respect.
“I have information that there are certain clubs that are in favour and others against this (strike action), but I represent the players.
“We need to sort this out with the union, and we will tell them all of our problems. If from then on and after a few days, they don’t answer, then we will have to solve the situation.
“We are going to try to see that it doesn’t reach that extreme [of a strike]. But we are willing to go right to the last option if it is necessary.”
The players and the AFE have also raised concerns over the late kick-off times of Spanish league matches, with many games running past midnight local time, causing a drop in crowd numbers.
A meeting has been scheduled for next month between the AFE and La Liga, who are yet to comment.
